RX7.COM Drag-a-thon
IDRC Rocky Mountain Nationals, Denver, CO - Oct
21
And
The RX7 vs Supra Battle, St. Louis, MO - Oct 22
Team
RX7.COM, attempting to do what no other import drag team has done,
set out to dominate two events in two states within one weekend. This
undertaking was affectionately named the RX7.COM Drag-a-thon. Joining
the team on the road this time was Steve Kan and his '93 RX7. Our
itinerary was as follows:
Friday Morning: Leave Garland for Denver
Friday Night: Arrive Denver and rest before next day's event
Saturday: IDRC Rocky Mountain Nationals
Saturday Night: Leave Denver for St. Louis
Sunday Morning: Arrive St. Louis and compete in the RX7 vs
Supra Battle
Sunday Night: Start back home to Garland.
That weekend, team RX7.COM traveled over 2,500 miles, through 7 states
in one weekend. It was quite the road trip.
IDRC Rocky Mountain Nationals
Saturday morning we arrived at Bandimere Speedway. Bandimere is an
impressive track built into the side of a mesa. Being in the mountains
every racer knew that altitude would be a considerable factor in his/her
car's performance. Despite the altitude, team RX7.COM sweeped the
qualifying rounds with Ari and Steve taking first and second qualifying
positions, respectively, in the Street Class. Ari, feeling good about
the car's performance, decided to run the RX7.COM car in the Quick
Class qualifying round. The RX7.COM car took first place in qualifying
for Quick Class. Although we knew we could do well in the Quick eliminations
we decided to compete only in Street Class.
In
the eliminations Ari won against an old school Z car with a 10.77
@ 132.16 mph and Steve defeated another RX7 with an 11.27 @ 123.16
mph. In the semi-finals Steve stomped a Supra, and Ari beat an Eclipse.
Thus, Ari and Steve would compete against each other in the finals.
Regardless of who won, it was quite impressive that RX7.COM would
be taking home both the first and second place trophies. In the finals,
Ari won with a 10.32 @ 143.3 mph to Steve's 11.44 @ 126.7 mph. After
winning the Rocky Mountain Nationals, we were really pumped to head
out to St. Louis to race in the RX7 vs Supra Battle. We loaded the
cars, got in the truck and headed east out of Denver.
RX7 vs Supra Battle
As soon as we hit the Colorado/Kansas border the sky opened up and
began to pour heavily and non-stop. Although we knew the St. Louis
event would likely be called off due to rain, we continued our journey.
We drove all through the night to arrive in St. Louis late Sunday
morning.
We went straight to Gateway International Raceway, and like we had
suspected, the race had been canceled. At the track we did meet up
with Cameron Worth of Pettit Racing and some other friends. We all
decided to have lunch together across the street at a truck stop before
heading our separate ways. After lunch, team RX7.COM decided it was
time to head home, so we loaded up and started driving.
Although we were unable to race in St. Louis, the Drag-a-thon was
still a success. We made it to the two different cities in time for
the events, and we dominated the competition at the Rocky Mountain
Nationals.
RX7.COM would like to thank Steve Kan and Kevin "Gilligan" Welch for
joining us and helping out on the Drag-a-thon. Also, we would like
to thank the IDRC for once again putting on a superb event and Bandimere
Speedway for hosting it. |
